Systemic Trunk Injection

Targeted, low-drift treatment delivered inside the tree.

Systemic trunk injection delivers a measured dose of insecticide or treatment directly into the tree’s vascular system, which carries it up into the canopy. It is precise and low-drift — the product stays inside the tree instead of washing into the soil, lawn or air — which makes it the preferred way to treat emerald ash borer and other borers.

Creative Tree & Stump LLC is a Brighton, CO-based tree removal company serving 22 communities across Adams, Weld, Jefferson, Boulder, Broomfield, and Denver counties. Shawn Brandau, an ISA Certified Arborist working the Front Range since 1991, doses each tree by size for effective, responsible treatment, and the company is fully insured. Used on the right pest, it is one of the most effective tools in tree care.

How Trunk Injection Works

We place small injection ports low on the trunk and introduce the product under pressure, letting the tree’s own vascular system distribute it upward and outward into the branches and leaves. Because the tree does the work of moving the treatment, it reaches the pests feeding in the canopy and under the bark far more reliably than a spray that only coats the outside and washes off in the next rain or wind.

The advantages are precision and containment. The dose is measured to the tree’s size, nothing drifts onto neighboring plants or blows around the yard, and there is no runoff into the soil or storm drains. The injection points are small and close over time, so a healthy tree handles the process without lasting harm. Compared with the alternative of losing the tree to a lethal pest, the small injection wounds are a minor trade, and we space and place the ports to minimize them.

What It Treats

Trunk injection is most associated with emerald ash borer, where injecting emamectin benzoate is the most effective way to protect a healthy ash — see our full emerald ash borer treatment page for the details on saving ash trees. It is also used against other wood-boring insects and certain sucking pests, and some formulations treat specific tree diseases and nutrient deficiencies.

It is not the answer to every problem, though, which is why it fits within an integrated pest management plan rather than being applied automatically. We use it where its precision and reliability genuinely beat the alternatives, and a different approach where they do not. Matching the method to the pest is the whole point of a thoughtful program rather than a default treatment applied to everything.

Reapplication Cycle

How long a treatment lasts depends on the product and the pest. For emerald ash borer, an emamectin benzoate injection generally protects a tree for about two years before it needs repeating, while other treatments follow their own schedules. Because pressures like EAB do not go away, injection is usually an ongoing cycle rather than a single event. Skipping a cycle leaves the tree exposed again, so consistency matters as much as the treatment itself, and we track the timing for you. A protected tree stays protected only as long as the cycle is kept up, which is why we handle the reminders so you do not have to.

We track when each tree is due and remind you, so protection does not lapse at the wrong time. Around Boulder — where EAB was first found in Colorado — many ash owners have been on a steady injection cycle for years, keeping otherwise doomed trees healthy and standing. We provide systemic trunk injection throughout all 22 of the communities we serve.

Trunk Injection FAQs

It is a treatment delivered directly into the trunk, where the tree’s vascular system carries it up into the canopy. It reaches pests feeding in the leaves and under the bark, with minimal drift or runoff compared to spraying, because the product stays sealed inside the tree the whole time. The tree itself then carries the treatment up to wherever the pests are feeding.

Most often emerald ash borer, where it is the most effective protection for healthy ash. It also treats other wood-boring and sucking pests, and some formulations address specific diseases and nutrient deficiencies, depending on the tree and the problem.

The injection points are small and a healthy tree closes them over time. Dosed correctly for the tree’s size by a trained arborist, the benefit of stopping a lethal pest far outweighs the minor, temporary wounds, which a vigorous tree seals over within a season or two.

It depends on the product and pest. For emerald ash borer, emamectin benzoate generally protects a tree for about two years per injection. We track the schedule and remind you when each tree is due, so protection never lapses at the wrong time of year.

It is one of the lowest-drift options available, because the product stays inside the tree rather than spraying into the air or washing into soil and storm drains. That containment is a major reason we favor it for the right pests, especially near gardens, play areas, vegetable beds and water.
