Wildfire Mitigation & Defensible Space for Colorado Homes

Written by Shawn Brandau and the Creative Tree & Stump crew — 30+ years of Front Range tree experience.

Defensible Space: The Difference Between Embers and Evacuation

Most homes destroyed in Colorado wildfires are ignited by embers — wind-borne burning debris that lands on roofs, in gutters, under decks, and against fences. Defensible space is the buffer you build so that fire has nothing to climb and embers have nothing to ignite near your home.

What is defensible space in Colorado?

Defensible space is the three-zone buffer around your home — Zone 0 (0–5 feet, ember-resistant), Zone 1 (5–30 feet, lean and clean), and Zone 2 (30–100 feet, reduced fuel) — built to Colorado State Forest Service standards so wildfire has nothing to feed on close to the house.

The zone-by-zone breakdown and what our crews do on-site appear below.

The Three Zones, Done Right

  • Zone 0 (0–5 feet) — the most important. Non-combustible mulch or stone, no shrubs against siding, no flammable material under decks, gutters cleaned. Embers can’t ignite what isn’t there.
  • Zone 1 (5–30 feet) — lean and clean. Grass mowed short, trees limbed up 10 feet, ladder fuels removed, tree crowns spaced ~10 feet apart (more on slopes).
  • Zone 2 (30–100 feet) — reduced fuel. Thinned trees, dead and dying trees removed, branches limbed, spacing increasing with slope.

Why Ladder Fuels Matter on the Front Range

A ladder fuel is anything that lets ground fire climb into the canopy — low limbs, shrubs under trees, stacked wood, tall grass against trunks. Once fire reaches tree crowns, it becomes a crown fire that no defensible space can stop. Our crews remove ladder fuels, thin crowded stands, limb up trees, and chip the slash so your property is left clean and compliant.

Boulder County and Foothill Homes

Foothill properties along Boulder County’s wildland-urban interface face the steepest standards, and for good reason — fire runs faster uphill and embers travel for miles ahead of the flame front. If you are in a foothills or grassland-interface home, defensible space is not optional landscaping; it is the single most effective thing you can do to protect the house. We provide free assessments, written scopes, and Firewise-friendly work for foothill homeowners and HOAs.
