The heart of IPM is paying attention. We inspect trees, correctly identify the insect or disease involved, and gauge how serious it really is — many things people panic about are cosmetic or self-correcting and need no treatment at all. Only when a problem crosses a meaningful threshold, where it threatens the tree’s health rather than just its looks, do we act — and then with the lightest effective touch that solves the problem.
That judgment is what separates IPM from a spray schedule. A few aphids are not an emergency; a borer infestation in a stressed tree is. By matching the response to the actual risk, we protect the tree without dousing your yard, your family and the beneficial insects that keep many pests in check on their own. Wipe those out with blanket spraying and you often end up with worse pest problems than you started with, as the pests rebound faster than their predators do.
A handful of pests cause most of the trouble on the Front Range. Other regular offenders include various wood-boring beetles, scale, aphids and spider mites, several of which flare up most on trees already weakened by drought or poor soil, late frosts or other stress.
That stress link is central to how we work: a vigorous tree resists pests far better than a struggling one, so correcting the underlying soil, water and nutrition issues is often the most effective pest control of all. Across Commerce City and the metro, we see the same pattern — the stressed trees are the ones that get hit hardest. Fixing the underlying stress is frequently the real cure.
When treatment is genuinely needed, we choose the most precise option for the pest. For borers and certain pests, systemic trunk injection places the treatment inside the tree with almost no drift. For overwintering scale, mites and aphid eggs, a well-timed dormant oil application smothers them before spring with very low toxicity.
The point is to use the right tool at the right time, not to spray everything on a calendar. IPM is a strategy of monitoring and identifying pests, deciding whether they have reached a level that warrants action, and then using the most targeted, least-toxic treatment that works. It controls real threats while minimizing spraying and protecting beneficial insects, your family and the wider environment, which a blanket spray program cannot claim.
Calendar spraying treats problems that may not exist, wastes money, and kills the beneficial insects that naturally control pests. IPM treats only when a real threshold is crossed, which is healthier for the tree, your family and the environment, and usually cheaper over a season as well.
Emerald ash borer is the most serious, killing untreated ash. Wood-boring beetles, scale, aphids and spider mites are also common, and they tend to attack trees already stressed by drought, heat or poor soil, which is why keeping a tree healthy is half the battle.
They can, but far less. A vigorous tree resists and recovers from pests much better than a stressed one, which is why correcting soil, water and nutrition is one of the most effective forms of pest control there is — a well-cared-for tree simply does not attract trouble the way a weak one does, so good cultural care quietly prevents most pest problems before they start.
We identify the pest and assess how much damage it is actually causing or likely to cause. Cosmetic or minor issues are monitored, not sprayed. When a pest genuinely threatens the tree, we use the most targeted treatment available, applied at the right time for the best result with the least collateral impact. The goal is always the healthiest possible tree with the least intervention needed to get there, which is better for the tree and for you.
